IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Radley
Character journal:
crystalmaster
Series name: Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds
Canon notes: Post-episode 92, after the Crash Town arc
Species: Human
Age: 25
Arrival Condition: Physically healthy, but suffering PTSD from trauma and torture back home. He will strive to hide this.
History: https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Radley This Wiki is poorly written, but at least it doesn't say that Radley's game fate is his anime fate, as the other Wiki does. Those are two separate verses. The Wiki fails to accurate describe the war between Radley and Malcolm. They each put up a Duelist to play the Duel Monsters card game every night, with the loser going to work for the boss of the winner in the mine they both want to control. The Duelists would agree to this. While canon made it clear that Malcolm tortured his miners, there is no proof that Radley did the same.
Personality: Radley is the leader of a most unusual motorcycle gang. Their clothes are clean and not torn or stained, they don't bully or terrorize as Malcolm's men do, and they hang out in a fancy and clean two-story diner/restaurant that Radley owns. Radley treats the gang members as equals and they are comfortable talking with him and try to offer reassurance when he's upset. It's common fanon to portray them as bar rats, but in actual canon there is no proof of what they're drinking in the original. It could be cola or root beer. In the dub, it's identified as cactus cider. Some diners serve alcohol, but many do not, so Radley and the rest might not even have access to alcohol in their diner. It would fit with his unusual nature if they do not.
Radley is charismatic and extroverted, wanting to be friendly with his Duelist Kalin Kessler and growing bitter and hurt upon being rejected. With those he doesn't like, such as Malcolm, he is not above mocking with childish insults and silly terms such as "itty-bitty." He may have a darker side, as he threatened Kalin with the possible explosion of his Duel Gun should he try to deliberately lose a duel. Considering how nice his gang is, however, and how nice Radley is depicted versus Malcolm, it feels out of place and character when this is suddenly introduced late in his screentime. It doesn't ring true, and it makes more sense as a desperate lie when Radley thinks he's going to lose Kalin, who is his best hope of defeating Malcolm for good.
Throughout all the upsetting twists and turns, Radley remains calm, cool, and collected, counseling his gang when some of them get restless and coming across as a good leader. He is finally pushed to his breaking point and snaps when Lawton defeats him in an unfair one-turn-kill and he is sent to Malcolm's brutal part of the mine. Seeing the miners tortured, he physically shakes in terror and fear and finally cracks, screaming at Kalin and shaking him, blaming him for what's happening to them. It may simply be an emotional outburst he doesn't really mean, or he may think Kalin lost his duel on purpose since Kalin revealed he wanted to lose and be tortured in the mines.
It is most likely that Radley is tortured in the mines, especially since Yusei and Kalin leave him behind when they escape and his fate remains unknown. Although they later decide to rescue everyone, it is not shown if Radley is among them or how badly hurt he is. Miners are seen being electrocuted and whipped, and Radley was fitted with the shock collar upon arrival. This experience leaves him with lasting emotional scars and he will be very damaged upon arrival to Agra 10. He tries his best to hide it and be the friendly, good leader he is, but he's desperately hurting and needs to be told it's alright to show his pain, to let it out, to not always be the tower.
Radley's sense of style leans towards black leather and silver jewelry. But although he looks the part of a punk, he is actually philosophical and has a good command of language. He is not all he appears to be at all, and his mysterious past very likely has him start out with a far different background. His original name in the Japanese, Ramon, means "protector, counselor," and both meanings fit with how he is depicted in canon. He is the only barrier to Malcolm's desired totalitarian takeover. Once Radley falls, so does the town, and it becomes far worse. Whether Radley is a deliberate protector or not, he did protect the town from a worse fate than the nightly duels, and he will be depicted here as someone who was deliberately trying to do so.
Abilities: Radley is a skilled businessman, knowing how to run both a mine and a restaurant. He has communication and people skills and his nature draws people to him. It's very likely that he is responsible for some of the buildings in town aside from the diner. It is a modern Old West town that was built up from scratch when the mine opened. He most likely knows how to design and build homes and other buildings. As a skilled motorcyclist, he may also have some knowledge of properly caring for and maintaining such vehicles and possibly others.
Personal Item: His Duel Monsters deck.
